Keep premium categories separate. Their labels can describe different reasons for additional pay and different rules.

Do not let one label stand for another

A shift differential may relate to when work occurs. Holiday pay may relate to an employer policy or agreement. Overtime has legal and factual dimensions that depend on coverage and applicable rules. These categories should not be merged simply because they all look like extra money. This publication does not determine whether a particular Northwell employee is entitled to any premium.

Find the controlling explanation

For each line, ask what written policy, agreement or official rule explains it. A colleague’s experience can suggest a question but cannot establish your own treatment. Identify the relevant employee group, dates and work arrangement. If a collective bargaining agreement applies, use its applicable provisions and the established representative or employer channel rather than generalizing from a public careers page.

Understand why the unit matters

A premium might be expressed as an additional hourly amount, a percentage or a flat amount. The display alone may not tell you which. A line showing eight hours does not necessarily add eight unique hours to total time worked. Ask whether those hours are already included elsewhere. Preserve the code, units, rate and amount together so the explanation can be checked.

Federal context has boundaries

The Department of Labor’s overtime materials distinguish the workweek and regular-rate framework. They do not authorize a universal calculation from a job title. Healthcare-specific arrangements, exemptions, state rules and agreements can require additional analysis. Avoid treating a salary label, weekend assignment or twelve-hour shift as sufficient to decide the legal result. Seek an applicable answer when rights or money are disputed.

A useful side-by-side example

Imagine two statements with identical worked hours but different premium lines because the assignments differed. The question is not merely why net pay changed. It is which dates or assignments qualified for each line under the governing terms. Make the comparison using the actual schedule and statement, with private identifiers removed from any preliminary general inquiry.

Keep your request factual

Ask for the definition and calculation basis of the specific premium, then the reason it was included or omitted for the identified period. Avoid guessing that a particular coworker’s rate applies. If an adjustment is agreed, request its expected record and timing. The practical goal is a transparent explanation tied to your own evidence, not a generic online verdict.

Practice the difference between extra hours and extra pay

Suppose an invented statement shows forty base hours at $20, plus a $2 supplement for eight of those same hours. The arithmetic is $800 plus $16, giving $816 before other lines. Adding the supplement’s eight units to forty would count the same time twice. This example is deliberately hypothetical: it supplies no Northwell rate and no overtime rule. Its purpose is to show the question to ask when a premium row has hours attached: are those unique hours, or hours already counted under another category?
